For decades, scientific research has found women continue to use creams, oils and ointments in attempts to prevent stretch mark formation despite their ineffectiveness.

Stretch mark creams do not work to prevent stretch marks. They can moisturise the skin, and provide an opportunity for belly massage and in-utero bonding with baby. Beyond that, they do not go any deeper to the dermis - the skin layer where stretch marks occur.

One Cochrane review found that a certain cream containing Centella asiatica extract, alpha tocoperhols and collagen-elastin hydrolysated appeared to help prevent stretch marks but only for women who had previously experienced stretch marks in pregnancy. No evidence was shown to prove benefit for general use in preventing stretch marks. It still remains unclear if it is daily massage or certain ingredients that are beneficial. 
A recent study concluded as well there are no definite treatments for preventing or treating stretch marks.

Instead of focusing on body hatred and dislike of stretch marks, take the time to massage them and accept that they are there.
